Sigiriya
Sigiriya is 169 kms from Colombo . It’s on the way to Polonnaruwa. Sigiriya rock was a royal citadel for nearly twenty years and is nearly one hectare in extent. It is said to build by King Kashyapa who killed his father to gain his wealth. But many historians of present challenge it. Dr. Lal Sirinivas of Bangalore a historian states that it was the abode of King Kuvera but later won over by Ravana and was called Chirakuta. This wonderful fortress is a masterpiece of artistry.
Aluvihara Cave Temple is a short distance from Matale town. Aluvihara designate the greatest single event since the passing away of Gautama Buddha (Parinibbana). It was in this cave temple that the Tripitaka (Scriptures) were written in the 1 st century BC, during the reign of King Walagamba.
Veheragala Laggala – On the rock, on the slope of the hill at this site are the remains of a small dagoba and several mounds with pillars on them. On the east slope of the hill is an inscription.
Dambulla Rock Temple also known as the Golden Rock dates back to the 1 st century BC. It has a rock ceiling but is covered with paintings of Buddhist legends. This temple has the largest number of Buddha statues in one place.
